Scouting Report: Reggie Ragland | NFL Draft Board

Scouting Report: Reggie Ragland

Player Background:

A two year starter at the inside linebacker position at Alabama.  Ragland has shown the ability to lead one of the best defenses in the nation over the past two years.  SEC defensive player of the year Reggie Ragland has shown dominance at his position.  The number one ranked inside linebacker coming out of high school, Ragland has continued to develop as a player and leader on the field.

Strengths:

Reggie Ragland has ideal size at 6’2″ and 247lbs to take on blockers and physically dominate in the front seven.  He is a highly instinctive playmaker who has the ability to impact the game from the inside linebacker position.  Ragland plays with strength and power, he punishes ball carriers and is an intimidator in the middle of the field.  He is able to quickly diagnose offensive plays and find the ball in traffic.

Ragland was a highly productive player at Alabama and has the ability to step in day one and be a productive NFL starter.  He is a playmaker on the inside and can change the momentum of a game through a big tackle or creating turnovers.  Ragland has the ability to close distance in a hurry and make tackles on the perimeter or chasing down passers.  A dominant player who can step in and produce.

Weaknesses:

Ragland is at his best when he is able to patrol the middle of the field and attack the line of scrimmage.  Though he can be effective in zone coverage, he may be exposed in man coverage as he doesn’t have great hips.  There is very little to dislike about his game, though he is not an elite athlete it has been proven that elite athleticism is not required at the inside linebacker position.

Projection:

Reggie Ragland is a defensive building block and will provide immediate production at the next level.  He has the ability to have the type of impact that Rolando McClain has had in the league.  McClain has been an impact player on the field and stepped into a depleted Dallas Cowboys defense last year and was the main factor in shoring up the unit.  Ragland has the same ability to be a big time hitter and imitator similar to McClain, but without the trouble off the field.
